U.S. intelligence agencies are currently examining potential scenarios involving Iran in response to a hypothetical unilateral victory declaration by U.S. President Donald Trump amid the two-month-long conflict, which has resulted in numerous casualties and posed political challenges for the White House, according to two U.S. officials and an individual familiar with the matter.
At the request of senior administration officials, the intelligence community is conducting an analysis to comprehend the potential outcomes if Trump were to de-escalate the conflict swiftly, possibly alleviating political pressure on him. However, such a move could empower Iran to potentially rebuild its nuclear and missile programs, posing a threat to U.S. allies in the region.
While no definitive decision has been reached, the intelligence community has previously assessed Iran’s likely reactions to a U.S. victory declaration. Following the initial bombing campaign in February, intelligence agencies speculated that Iran would interpret a U.S. declaration of victory and subsequent troop withdrawal as a win. Conversely, if the U.S. claimed victory but maintained a significant troop presence, Iran would likely perceive it as a negotiating tactic without guaranteeing an end to the conflict.
The CIA, in response to this information, denied awareness of the reported assessment by the intelligence community. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence declined to comment on the matter.
The ongoing war in Iran has faced strong public opposition in the United States, with only a small percentage of respondents in recent polls believing that the military campaign has been beneficial or enhanced the country’s security. Trump and his party are reportedly conscious of the political repercussions of the conflict, especially as the Strait of Hormuz remains partially closed, impacting global energy prices.
Despite discussions of various military options, including airstrikes on Iran’s military and political figures, the likelihood of more aggressive actions like a ground invasion has diminished in recent weeks. There is significant internal pressure on Trump to conclude the conflict, but the tactical challenges of resuming full-scale warfare have increased due to Iran’s strategic moves during the ceasefire period.
The situation remains fluid, with negotiations ongoing and no clear resolution in sight between the U.S. and Iran, indicating a complex diplomatic and military landscape that continues to evolve.
