U.S. President Donald Trump declared on social media Wednesday his intention to initiate what he described as “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY” targeting Iran. Trump announced plans for an Economic Warfare and Isolation campaign of unprecedented magnitude, although he provided minimal specifics.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump also cautioned about economic repercussions for any nation that supported Tehran or extended assistance to Iran. He emphasized that any country permitting its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to offer support to Iran would face significant economic consequences. While Trump did not identify the specific measures the U.S. would undertake against such countries, he urged an immediate halt to activities like oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, and front companies.
The ongoing conflict in the region has led to numerous casualties over the past six months, involving multiple Gulf countries. Iran’s control over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil trade, has caused disruptions in the market. Despite ceasefire agreements between the U.S. and Iran in April and June aimed at restoring normal shipping operations through Hormuz, these truces quickly collapsed, with Israel reducing its involvement in the conflict alongside the U.S.
Trump’s social media statements and threats are not always followed through as initially outlined. There have been conflicting reports on the status of talks between the U.S. and Iran. The United Arab Emirates recently suspended all trade activities with Iran following reports of missile launches, which Iran dismissed as unfounded. While China is a significant importer of Iranian oil, engaging in further economic hostilities with China risks potential retaliatory actions, given China’s status as a major exporter to the U.S., including crucial rare-earth minerals.
Mohammad Mokhber, an adviser to Iran’s supreme leader, affirmed Iran’s readiness for dialogue with the U.S. while emphasizing that negotiations should not be misconstrued as surrender. Mokhber stated that Iran’s resolve remains unbroken despite military pressure and sanctions. Contradictory statements have emerged regarding the ongoing talks with Iran, with Trump denying any active negotiations, while Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and special envoy, indicated that discussions with Iran were ongoing and possibly more robust than before.
