“The Pyramid”: Parody Musical Inspired by “Dance Moms” Resurfaces

A visit to the Abby Lee Dance Company was a mix of emotions, with mothers squabbling over their young dancers’ positions. The reality show “Dance Moms,” which aired in the 2010s, showcased a group of talented young dancers and their mothers navigating intense training and competitions. However, the show’s focal point was always Abby Lee Miller, known for her tough coaching style and weekly pyramid rankings of the dancers.

After nearly seven years since the show’s conclusion, a parody musical inspired by “Dance Moms” is in the works. Titled “The Pyramid: An Unauthorized ‘Dance Moms’ Musical,” the idea originated from college friends James Stryska and Isabel Grace Blankenship while browsing through a thrift store. They, along with a team of fellow “Dance Moms” enthusiasts, are developing the musical.

Their venture began with the production of an original song called “My Little Kendall,” which gained significant traction on TikTok in 2023, garnering over five million views and catching the attention of former cast members. L.A.-based producer Logan Clark, who previously worked on “Dance Moms,” and Tye Blue, the director of the parody musical “Titaníque,” joined as a creative producer after witnessing the viral success of the project.

Clark, recalling his past involvement with the show as a talent co-ordinator, emphasized the theatrical nature of “Dance Moms” and its potential for a musical adaptation. The show’s enduring popularity is evident through viral TikTok clips of memorable moments and ongoing fascination with the drama that unfolded on screen.

Notable cast members like Maddie Ziegler and JoJo Siwa have gone on to achieve success beyond the show, transitioning into music, acting, and entrepreneurship. The enduring appeal of “Dance Moms” lies in its ability to resonate with audiences who enjoy the competitive and dramatic elements portrayed on social media platforms.

The creators of the parody musical aim to capture the essence of the original show while highlighting the relationships behind the scenes. Their project is being documented on social media platforms as they work towards bringing the spirit of “Dance Moms” back to life on stage.
