In England, Cornwall Trading Standards flagged certain squishy toys for failing safety standards, while Hull City Council seized and disposed of toys due to high benzene levels, a known carcinogen causing eye, nose, throat irritation, skin issues, and potential harm if ingested. The actions followed a U.K. product recall in June.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reiterated warnings about burn risks linked to fake squishy toys not meeting safety regulations. Meanwhile, in Australia, Schyling, the maker of NeeDoh toys, requested the Australian Border Force to intercept counterfeit versions flooding the market.
Health Canada has received 36 reports concerning squishy dumpling toys between April and August, involving odors, sales without mention of issues, and instances of exploding toys causing injuries. Despite these reports, Health Canada has not confirmed any regulatory breaches or specific risks associated with the toys. Amazon Canada also removed some squishy dumpling toys proactively in response to safety concerns.
Toy manufacturers are not always required to disclose toy ingredients, raising concerns about potential harmful chemicals. Miriam Diamond, an environmental chemist at the University of Toronto, emphasized the need for vigilance from manufacturers and importers.
Consumer Reports noted that safety concerns extend beyond counterfeit products, with incidents reported even from retail-sold items. The U.S. Product Safety Commission advises families to keep squishy toys away from heat sources, inspect for leaks, and handle burst toys cautiously. Diamond recommended decluttering and sticking to simple toys and following age recommendations.
NeeDoh and Squishy Dumpling manufacturers did not provide comments when approached for feedback.
