Nick Reiner, accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, has been refused access to the $1.5 million US trust fund he sought for his legal defense. In a June filing, Reiner was pursuing allegedly unpaid funds from a trust established by his parents in 1993.
Court documents obtained by CBC News show that trustees turned down Reiner’s request for the money, citing the “slayer statute” in California law. This statute bars individuals who have “feloniously and intentionally” killed someone from inheriting money, property, or trusts from the deceased.
Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and his wife Michele, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their California home on December 14, 2025. Their son Nick Reiner was arrested hours after the incident. The 32-year-old was indicted on murder charges on July 20 and has entered a plea of not guilty.
The indictment, unsealed by a Los Angeles County grand jury, alleges that Reiner ambushed his parents. This, along with other circumstances, could lead to a potential death penalty. District Attorney Nathan Hochman has not yet confirmed whether the death penalty will be pursued.
Reiner is set to appear in court for a pretrial hearing in September and is currently represented by public defender Kimberly Greene. The filing in June mentioned that besides the main family trust fund, individual trust funds were set up for the Reiner children, with Nick entitled to half of his trust fund at 30 and the remainder at 35.
While claiming that he had not received the funds due to him at 30, Reiner argued in a petition that the trustees were withholding his rightful access to the money. The petition highlighted that the fund held assets of at least $1.5 million US.
Alan Jackson, the private attorney initially representing Reiner, left the case without explanation after a brief period. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover his legal costs before changing their decision.
The ongoing criminal case against Reiner has led to uncertainties regarding the distribution of trust fund assets, as stated by former overseeing lawyer Paul R. Kanin and incoming trustee Jodi Pais Montgomery. The filing emphasized that Reiner’s innocence presumption does not guarantee the release of the funds until the criminal proceedings conclude.
As the case progresses, details remain undisclosed, and authorities have refrained from speculating on motives behind the tragic incident. Jake Reiner, the eldest son, shared his anguish in an April statement, describing the ordeal as a “living nightmare” and expressing his grief over the loss of his parents.
