Russian drone attacks on Kyiv and its surrounding area have continued for the fifth consecutive day, causing disruptions in the daily lives of millions due to constant air raid sirens. The recent attacks on Monday resulted in injuries to four individuals and damage to various structures, including warehouse facilities, an apartment block, and a retail outlet in the Kyiv region, as reported by regional Gov. Tymur Tkachenko via Telegram.
Numerous drones, many of them equipped with jet engines, have been targeting Kyiv and nearby regions, leading to casualties, property damage, and disruptions. A drone strike by Russia on an ammunition depot on Friday triggered explosions that claimed the lives of 38 people.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Sunday that the ongoing drone assaults were intended to wear down the Ukrainian population. Within four days, Russia launched close to 1,500 drones towards Ukraine, with over half of them being jet-powered, according to Zelenskiy.
Additionally, a Russian strike caused a fire at a terminal operated by the private courier company Nova Poshta in the southern Odesa region, as confirmed by Gov. Oleh Kiper on Monday. In Kryvyi Rih, a jet-powered drone attack at an industrial site resulted in injuries to two individuals, as reported by a local official on Monday.
Both Ukraine and Russia have escalated attacks on economic targets recently, focusing on major e-commerce entities and retailers. Russia has targeted warehouses belonging to prominent supermarket chains, leading postal services, and home goods stores in Ukraine. In retaliation, Ukraine also struck Russian infrastructure, with a logistics hub in Russia’s Yekaterinburg being targeted in a drone attack, as announced by the local governor on Monday.
Russia has intensified its air assaults during the summer, exploiting Ukraine’s lack of interceptors capable of combating ballistic missiles. The increased frequency of daytime drone attacks has disrupted life in Kyiv, resulting in halts in metro services and disruptions to daily routines.
During air raid alerts, numerous passengers in Kyiv found themselves stranded on crowded platforms, waiting for train services to resume after crossings across the Dnipro River were halted. Among those affected was Yulianna Oliynyk, a 38-year-old nurse and psychologist, who was attempting to reach a school with her two sons before the academic year commenced. They were left stranded on a metro platform due to an air raid alert, forcing them to spend the previous night with relatives.
Expressing her concerns, Oliynyk mentioned considering sleeping in the metro station near the lyceum with sleeping bags due to the ongoing disruptions caused by the alerts, highlighting the challenges faced by families amid the escalating tensions.
