“Rescue of Frozen Swan ‘Clancey’ Warms Hearts”

A swan trapped on the frozen Connecticut river sparked a dramatic rescue operation led by Norwalk deputy fire chief Jonathan Maggio. Initially believed to be lifeless, the swan surprised onlookers by lifting its head as rescuers approached. The operation, involving 23 responders and wildlife experts, lasted around 30 minutes before the swan, dubbed Clancey, was freed from the icy waters.

Maggio, with decades of rescue experience, described the unique challenge of saving the swan, a first in his career. The team’s efforts to show compassion to the distressed bird paid off as Clancey responded positively to their assistance. Following the rescue, Clancey was taken to a local veterinary center for treatment, where he is expected to fully recover under the care of dedicated staff.
