“Remembering David Branch: OHL & CHL Mourn Loss at 77”

Former Ontario Hockey League commissioner and Canadian Hockey League president, David Branch, has passed away at the age of 77. The OHL and CHL confirmed his death on Monday, noting that he died on Sunday without disclosing the cause.

Branch held the position of OHL commissioner from 1979 until his retirement in 2024, and he served as the CHL president from 1996 to 2019. OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford expressed sadness over Branch’s passing, highlighting his significant contributions to the sport and his dedication to player welfare.

In honor of his legacy, the CHL renamed the player of the year award after him in the 2019-20 season. Branch, originally from Bathurst, New Brunswick, and a longtime resident of Whitby, Ontario, was recognized for his outstanding achievements in hockey, including serving on the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee and receiving the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2016.

CHL President Dan MacKenzie praised Branch for his unwavering commitment to enhancing the player experience both on and off the ice, attributing the leagues’ success to his leadership. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also paid tribute to Branch, describing him as a “trusted colleague” who dedicated his life to advancing major junior hockey in Canada.

Throughout his tenure, Branch spearheaded various initiatives to prioritize player welfare, safety, and education, including the establishment of the OHL Scholarship Program. Dean McIntosh of Hockey Canada commended Branch’s pioneering spirit and emphasized his impact on the growth and development of the Canadian Hockey League.

Branch’s profound influence on the hockey community and his dedication to the game will be remembered for years to come.
