Prince Edward Island’s esteemed athlete, Mark Arendz, is currently participating in a Para World Cup event in Germany. However, residents of the island might spot him in local grocery stores as he is featured on Cheerios boxes in a new initiative by General Mills honoring Canada’s athletes set to compete in the 2026 Paralympic and Olympic Games in Milano-Cortina, Italy.
Arendz, a Para skier from Hartsville, P.E.I., who faced a life-altering accident losing his left arm at a young age, has achieved remarkable success in his Paralympic career with a total of 12 medals, including two gold, in biathlon and cross-country skiing.
Expressing his delight, Arendz mentioned to CBC’s Island Morning that being featured on cereal boxes is a special experience that places Canadian athletes at breakfast and snack tables across the country. He emphasized the significance of campaigns like this in inspiring children to engage in sports and learn about the athletes’ journeys and achievements.
Looking ahead to his fifth Paralympic Games, Arendz shared his preparations and reflections on past experiences. Despite his extensive training regimen, he highlighted the value of experience in feeling more equipped for the upcoming games. He emphasized the importance of focusing on speed as he gears up for the 2026 Games, aiming to enhance his performance on the snow.
At 35 years old, Arendz acknowledged that he may be approaching the latter stages of his athletic career but remains committed to self-improvement. He emphasized the continuous pursuit of excellence by identifying areas for enhancement both on and off the snow, with the ultimate goal of being a top performer on race days.
The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympics, marking the 50th anniversary of the Winter Paralympics, will feature approximately 600 athletes competing in 79 medal events across six sports disciplines. The games are scheduled to take place from March 6 to 15, showcasing the talents and determination of para-athletes from around the world.
