Ovechkin Affirms Support for Peace Amid Political Ad

Share

Alex Ovechkin recently expressed his stance on peace and love after being featured in an advertisement for a political party associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The promotional video for the United Russia party surfaced just before Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals held their media day. Ovechkin, the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer, is embarking on his 22nd season with the Capitals.

In the ad, Ovechkin is shown standing alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, with former Soviet hockey star Viacheslav Fetisov also making an appearance. Ovechkin emphasized his support for his country, stating his belief in peace and love for all. He mentioned his willingness to participate in the advertisement when approached, stating it was a straightforward decision for him.

This is not the first time Ovechkin has shown support for President Putin. In 2017, he backed a social movement initiated by Putin called the “Putin Team,” citing his allegiance to his homeland.

During the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Ovechkin made a plea for peace, distancing himself from politics and reiterating his identity as an athlete. The ongoing parliamentary election in Russia features several parties aligned with Putin’s policies, with the sole opposition party against the war in Ukraine barred from participating.

As Ovechkin celebrated his 41st birthday, he confirmed his intention to settle in Russia post his NHL career. He expressed his attachment to both Russia and Washington, considering the latter his second home. While speculation arose regarding his retirement after the current season, Ovechkin remains focused on his training camp and the upcoming season with the Capitals.
