The leader of the Opposition has raised questions to the Progressive Conservative government regarding its stance on supporting a major Netflix production planned in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.). Netflix Canada recently unveiled plans to adapt the bestselling romance novel “This Summer Will Be Different” by Canadian author Carley Fortune, with filming scheduled to take place in Toronto and on P.E.I.
During a session on Wednesday, Liberal MLA Hal Perry highlighted the potential economic benefits of the 10-episode series for P.E.I. Perry pressed Premier Rob Lantz to affirm the government’s support for the production to proceed as announced, emphasizing the significant economic opportunities it could bring to the province.
In response, Lantz expressed the government’s interest in backing the project and mentioned that arrangements are being made for a meeting with the individuals involved in the production. Pre-production activities for the series are already in progress.
Club Red Productions, a local film and television company in P.E.I., estimated that the production could generate between $20 million to $30 million in direct economic activity in a single season. The company has requested government support for the project through the Film Production Fund.
Perry criticized Lantz for hesitation, suggesting that neighboring provinces like Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador would readily seize such an opportunity. Minister of Economic Development, Trade, and Artificial Intelligence Jenn Redmond stated that the government is receptive to opportunities that benefit the arts, culture, and other sectors.
Perry voiced concerns about potentially missing out on a significant economic opportunity and jeopardizing P.E.I.’s reputation within the global film industry by not fully supporting the Netflix series. Redmond acknowledged the tourism benefits but highlighted the need for discussions on government assistance for the project.
Lantz reiterated his commitment to economic growth and decision-making in the best interest of Prince Edward Islanders, expressing anticipation for the upcoming meeting. Redmond underscored the importance of engaging with the film industry and considering substantial investments in arts and culture for the province’s development.
Perry emphasized the economic advantages the production would bring through various sectors like accommodations, travel, food, and local employment. He urged the government to commit to supporting the project promptly to prevent missing out on the opportunities already being explored by the production company.
