NHL Legend Bobby Hull Had Stage 2 CTE at Passing

Bobby Hull, a legendary forward and two-time NHL MVP renowned for helping Chicago secure the Stanley Cup in 1961, was confirmed to have had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) at the time of his passing two years ago, as disclosed by his widow on Wednesday. Boston University’s CTE Center researchers determined that Hull had stage 2 CTE at the time of his death at the age of 84. Hull grappled with memory issues and impaired decision-making during his last years. Motivated by witnessing his former teammate Stan Mikita’s struggles, Hull made the decision to donate his brain to advance research on CTE, aiming to spare others from the suffering endured by Mikita’s family. Known as “The Golden Jet” due to his speed and distinctive blond hair, Hull was a prolific NHL forward, amassing 610 goals over 16 seasons with Chicago, Hartford, and Winnipeg. He mesmerized fans with his exceptional shooting and skating abilities and still holds the record for most goals scored in the Chicago franchise at 604. Additionally, Hull netted 303 goals during his seven-year stint with the Jets in the World Hockey Association. Dr. Ann McKee, the director of the Boston University CTE Center, expressed gratitude to Hull and other NHL players and families for contributing to CTE research efforts. She emphasized the importance of retired players seeking assistance if concerned about CTE, as advancements are being made in symptom management. The National Hockey League Players’ Association recently established an advisory committee to educate players on CTE and the repercussions of concussions on the brain. A study by Boston University researchers in December revealed that 18 out of 19 deceased NHL players examined, including Hull, Mikita, Ralph Backstrom, Bob Probert, and Derek Boogaard, had CTE. The study also indicated a 34% increased likelihood of developing CTE for each year of playing hockey. CTE, a progressive brain ailment, has been detected in athletes and military veterans exposed to head injuries. It can only be diagnosed posthumously through brain examination.
