“Newfoundland Communities Impose Fire Ban Amid Rising Brush Fires”

Share

Reports of brush fires in Newfoundland’s Bay de Verde Peninsula have prompted the Heart’s Content Volunteer Fire Department to impose a fire ban in their community and New Perlican, despite wildfire season not officially starting yet. Heart’s Content fire chief Kyle Piercey expressed the need to prevent a repeat of last year’s devastating wildfire season that saw numerous uncontrolled fires causing evacuations and destroying hundreds of structures in the region.

Bay Roberts Fire Rescue recently responded to a brush fire in Port de Grave that spread over a significant area, posing a threat to nearby homes. The fire, which originated from a barrel fire, quickly escalated out of control, according to Bay Roberts fire chief Michael Murphy. Several other fire departments in Conception Bay have also dealt with multiple brush fires this month, some of which were ignited by barrel fires.

Piercey decided to implement the fire ban following reports of brush fires and close calls in neighboring areas. The ban prohibits all open pit fires, while allowing the use of propane barbecues and fireplaces. It will remain in effect until further notice. Piercey emphasized the importance of obtaining a permit from the provincial forestry department before burning any brush.

The community remains on edge as the upcoming wildfire season approaches, prompting proactive measures to ensure safety. Heart’s Content Mayor Glenda Hiscock vividly recalled the fear of a previous wildfire coming dangerously close to the town, highlighting the dedication and sacrifices made by volunteer firefighters in protecting their communities.

In light of the previous year’s challenges, Hiscock emphasized the significance of early preventive actions by the fire department. Safety remains a top priority, with a focus on avoiding the devastating impacts of wildfires experienced in the past.
