The FBI conducted an investigation in 2024 on a New York resident following confrontations by Canadian individuals who accused him of traveling to Canada for illicit activities with a minor. Almost two years later, Kyle Devlin Lawrence faced charges after a 16-year-old girl went missing in Ohio, as per U.S. court documents examined by CBC News.
Lawrence, aged 44, admitted guilt in a federal court in Cincinnati last week to one count of transportation with the intent to engage in illegal sexual behavior. The charge stemmed from the case of an Ohio teenager referred to in a federal grand jury indictment only by the initials M.F., who disappeared in February, sparking online speculation until her recovery weeks later.
An FBI special agent in Cincinnati filed a criminal complaint after Lawrence’s arrest in late February, revealing that a social media account associated with him had been flagged for possible child exploitation as early as 2023. Following a group of Canadians confronting Lawrence in the subsequent year and posting the incident online, federal investigators launched a case. However, the initial investigation concluded without charges as Lawrence did not respond to an FBI agent’s calls.
FBI special agent Brandon Capps from the Cincinnati field office documented that Lawrence was reported to the FBI in May 2024 after being confronted by a civilian vigilante group while in Canada. The group alleged that Lawrence traveled to Canada for sexual contact with a purported 15-year-old girl. The group later shared their encounter with Lawrence online.
The details of the 2024 incident are not further elucidated in the document. It remains unclear where in Canada the confrontation transpired or how the vigilante group obtained information about Lawrence’s intentions.
Records indicate that Lawrence resided near Buffalo, N.Y., close to the border town of Fort Erie in southern Ontario’s Niagara region. Niagara Regional Police confirmed no incidents involving Lawrence in their records.
The FBI offices in Buffalo and Cincinnati declined to comment on the Canadian incident. A spokesperson for the federal prosecutor’s office in Cincinnati also indicated a lack of additional information about the confrontation. Lawrence’s defense attorney, Zenaida Lockard, based in Cincinnati, did not respond to CBC’s requests for a statement.
The criminal complaint states that an FBI agent from the Buffalo field office attempted to interview Lawrence at his residence in June 2024, but Lawrence was unavailable. He later informed the investigator that he would only speak to the FBI in the presence of an attorney. In the following month, the same agent made another attempt to reach Lawrence, who did not return the calls.
It was discovered that online accounts linked to Lawrence were reported to the U.S. National Center for Missing and Exploited Children for potential exploitation. In August 2023, a concerned citizen reported that the Snapchat user “Kyell227” was involved in child sexual exploitation, with investigators connecting the account to an address matching Lawrence’s residence. In July 2025, the file-sharing service Dropbox notified NCMEC after detecting two photos and a video containing suspected child sexual abuse material in an account attributed to Kyle Lawrence.
Lawrence awaits sentencing in the Ohio case, with the U.S. attorney’s office in Cincinnati announcing that the charge of transportation with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity carries a minimum 10-year prison term.
