Netflix and Warner Music Group (WMG) have sealed an exclusive long-term agreement to create documentary series and films delving into the lives, music, and lasting impacts of the label’s musicians. This collaboration, disclosed on Friday, grants Netflix access to one of the most extensive music collections in history. WMG boasts a roster that includes iconic figures like David Bowie, Cher, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha Franklin, and Joni Mitchell, as well as contemporary sensations like Charli XCX, Coldplay, and Bruno Mars.

This deal represents the latest development in a growing competition between music rights holders and streaming services vying to transform vast music libraries into premium visual content to entice subscribers. Music documentaries have emerged as a popular medium for fan-centric, culturally significant entertainment, exemplified by the success of Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour” film, which grossed over $260 million globally.

As per the agreement, WMG will collaborate with Unigram, a production company affiliated with the label, which will function as the studio for their extensive projects. Each production will be crafted in partnership with the artists themselves or their estates.

This partnership enhances Netflix’s expanding lineup of music content, solidifying its position as a frontrunner in the genre. The streaming giant has already garnered acclaim for productions like “Homecoming: A Film by Beyonce” and “Quincy.” Competing platforms are also heavily investing in music storytelling. Disney+ showcases a variety of prominent releases, including “The Beach Boys,” while Max has gained attention with documentaries such as “Stax: Soulsville U.S.A.,” shedding light on historic labels and influential musicians.

Moreover, Apple Music has diversified into original music video content, generating documentaries and live-streamed concerts through its Apple Music Live series, featuring renowned artists like Harry Styles and Billie Eilish.
