Manitoba NDP Member of Parliament Leah Gazan has officially thrown her support behind documentarian Avi Lewis for the leadership of the party, becoming the first current MP to endorse a candidate. Gazan believes Lewis has the capability to revitalize the party and provide solutions to the challenges of high living costs and the climate emergency. Renowned environmentalist David Suzuki also gave his endorsement to Lewis earlier this week.
As the January 28 membership deadline approaches, various NDP leadership contenders have been gathering noteworthy endorsements. Former Ontario MP Charlie Angus has backed Alberta MP Heather McPherson, emphasizing the need for experienced leadership to rebuild the party effectively. Meanwhile, union leader Rob Ashton has received the endorsement of the United Steelworkers union, a key supporter of the NDP with a robust political organizing division.
