Dean Penney stood attentively as his first-degree murder trial commenced in Corner Brook on Wednesday, acknowledging the jury with nods. Crown attorney Kate Ashton informed the jury that they would uncover evidence over the next four weeks indicating that Penney meticulously planned and confessed to the murder of his estranged wife on tape.
Ashton stated that the jury would view recorded interviews of Dean Penney, including three with police officers and two with an undercover officer posing as a crime boss. She emphasized that Penney confessed to the crime boss details of the murder and disposal of the body to prevent discovery.
Accused of killing Jennifer Hillier-Penney, who has been missing since late 2016, Penney pleaded not guilty. Ashton revealed in her opening statement that Hillier-Penney was alive on November 30, 2016, and that Penney orchestrated her murder while she was alone at home that night.
The Crown intends to present over 20 witnesses, with the first call being made on Wednesday. Yvonne Decker, Hillier-Penney’s sister, testified that she was with her sister in a car the night before her disappearance, during a call from Penney where he appeared distressed about her return.
Defense lawyer Mark Gruchy described the case as unique and urged the jury to carefully assess the evidence, questioning the reliability of Penney’s confession during the undercover operation. Gruchy indicated that Penney would testify during the trial, offering his perspective on the intense circumstances he faced.
The jury selection, crowded with more than 100 potential jurors, resulted in the selection of 14 individuals, including two alternates, with deliberations to involve 12 members. The trial, presided over by Justice Vikas Khaladkar, is set to continue on Thursday before a break for Good Friday, resuming the following Monday.
