“Michael Bradley Named New York Red Bulls Head Coach”

Former Toronto FC captain Michael Bradley has been officially unveiled as the head coach of the New York Red Bulls, describing it as an “amazing opportunity.” Bradley takes over from Sandro Schwarz, who was relieved of his duties on October 27 after a two-season stint with the team.

The New York Red Bulls missed the playoffs this season, marking the end of a 15-year streak of postseason appearances. They finished in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 12-15-7. In 2024, the Red Bulls secured a seventh-place finish in the East and reached the MLS Cup final, where they were defeated by the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Bradley, aged 38, has swiftly transitioned from his playing career, which concluded in 2023 after a decade with Toronto FC. Following a coaching role at Norway’s Stabaek in 2024 under his father Bob Bradley, he took charge of the Red Bulls reserve team in June. Under his guidance, the Red Bulls II clinched the MLS Next Pro Cup title with a penalty shootout victory over the Colorado Rapids 2 after a 3-3 draw in extra time.

Assuming the role of head coach for the Red Bulls’ first team on December 15, Bradley expressed his excitement at the opportunity. His appointment aligns him with New York sporting director Julian de Guzman, a former TFC player and Canada captain.

Hailing from New Jersey, Bradley, who earned 151 caps for the U.S. national team from 2006 to 2019, has strong connections to the Red Bulls. Initially drafted 36th overall by the franchise when it was known as the MetroStars in 2004, Bradley’s father was the team’s coach at that time.

Both Bradley and de Guzman emphasized their shared vision of a team that plays attractive, dynamic football. They aim for more than just a playoff spot, striving to create a winning culture at the club. The Red Bulls have already made roster changes, bringing in new talent while parting ways with several players.

Bradley’s coaching philosophy centers on a younger, faster, and more athletic team, reflecting his leadership style as a former player. With a career that showcased his skills as a midfield organizer and motivator, Bradley is determined to instill a winning mentality within the Red Bulls squad.
