William F. Baker and his spouse have been the proprietors of Henry Island for over three decades. At 84 years old, Baker is now looking to sell the nearly 90-hectare island to a buyer committed to its conservation.
Located a short boat ride away from Port Hood, N.S., Henry Island boasts a four-bedroom family residence and a functional lighthouse constructed in 1901. Purchased in 1991, the Bakers have utilized the island as a retreat from their bustling lives in New York City.
Baker, renowned for his career in broadcasting, was the president of the primary PBS station in New York for two decades. Prior to that role, he held the position of president at Westinghouse Television, where he played a pivotal role in launching Oprah Winfrey’s talk show career.
Driven by a quest for a tranquil existence, both Baker and his wife, Jeannemarie Gelin-Baker, a nurse practitioner, sought solace when they discovered Henry Island. Fascinated by lighthouses and desiring to own an island, Baker was advised by a colleague to explore Canada’s East Coast.
Expressing his admiration for lighthouses, Baker emphasized their symbolic significance, portraying qualities of altruism and selflessness throughout history. The couple’s affection for Henry Island blossomed due to its serene ambiance, enveloped by pristine beaches, rugged cliffs, and a diverse wildlife habitat.
Although the lighthouse and residence on the island required maintenance, with the assistance of local residents, the property underwent extensive renovations and now operates entirely off the grid, utilizing rainwater for consumption, solar energy, and an outhouse.
Despite the emotional attachment to Henry Island, the Bakers find it challenging to sustain the upkeep of the property at their age. The island has been listed for sale for nearly two years at a price close to $7 million Cdn, garnering interest from potential buyers in various regions, including Ontario, the U.S., and Germany.
Angie Bryant, the Bakers’ agent at Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, noted the growing trend of island sales, particularly in regions like Mahone Bay. The Bakers aim to secure a buyer dedicated to preserving the island’s untouched beauty, emphasizing the importance of its conservation over commercial development.
As the search for a new owner continues, the Bakers remain committed to finding the right steward for Henry Island, ensuring its legacy is upheld for future generations.
