Madeline Schizas made a strong statement to those eyeing her championship title, and she certainly delivered on Sunday. Schizas clinched her fourth victory at the Canadian figure skating championships, solidifying her position as the sole women’s singles representative for the Milan Cortina Olympics. This win came after a bold declaration she made earlier, asserting that she wouldn’t yield her Olympic spot to anyone, including two-time Olympian Gabrielle Daleman.

Speaking at Centre Slush Puppie on Sunday, Schizas reflected on her determination, stating, “I meant it. I was ready to fight for what I wanted, and I think I proved that today.” The 22-year-old from Oakville, Ontario, scored 135.94 points in her free skate routine set to “Butterfly Lovers Concerto,” achieving a total winning score of 200.86, propelling her from fourth place to first.

Daleman, aiming to become the first Canadian women’s singles skater to compete in three Olympics, settled for the silver medal with 195.35 points, marking her return to nationals after battling back and ankle injuries since 2022. Despite some missed jumps in her routine, Daleman expressed pride in her performance, acknowledging the tough competition presented by Schizas.

In the ice dance category, Gilles and Poirier secured their fifth Canadian title with a remarkable performance in their “Vincent” free dance routine. Their total score of 231.05, which surpassed the Canadian record they set, showcased their excellence in the sport. The duo, both aged 34, expressed gratitude and hinted that this could potentially be their final national championships.

With Schizas and Gilles/Poirier’s victories, the Canadian figure skating championships concluded, setting the stage for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina. The event witnessed remarkable performances and emotional moments, highlighting the dedication and talent of the athletes on the ice.
