The recent hockey tournament was a big success for the Iqaluit Blizzard U-13 girls hockey team, with 10-year-old Marissa Holland highlighting the thrill of winning multiple games. Compared to last year’s performance where they won only one game, this year the team secured five wins out of six, ultimately clinching a silver medal.

Marissa expressed her pride in the team’s accomplishment, emphasizing the strong bond among the girls as a key factor for their improved performance. Coach Chloe Norris echoed this sentiment, noting the positive impact of playing in an all-female team on the girls’ chemistry and skill development.

For Marissa, the most enjoyable part of the tournament was the camaraderie with her teammates, creating lasting memories both on and off the ice. Norris emphasized the importance of young girls playing together to foster a supportive environment for skill enhancement.

Established in 2023, the team was created with the aim of providing a dedicated platform for young girls to play and excel in hockey. Norris highlighted the growth in ice time availability, emphasizing the team’s focus on nurturing female talent in the sport.

The recent success of the Nunavut girls hockey team, winning a bronze ulu at the Arctic Winter Games, served as a source of inspiration for the Iqaluit team. The AWG players, hailed as role models, shared their experiences with the girls, instilling values of resilience, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

Reflecting on the historic win, Mia Holland felt a sense of empowerment, believing in their ability to achieve similar success. Mia’s sister, Marissa, described the silver medal win as “incredible,” marking a milestone for Iqaluit’s minor female hockey program.

With the momentum from these victories, Norris hopes to see an increase in female participation in hockey, aiming to inspire the next generation of players to pursue their passion for the sport.
