FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, sidestepped queries about his future during his attendance at the commencement of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup. The pressure on him has persisted since he abandoned his proposal to sell profits from the World Cup.
Infantino was seen conversing with Cezary Kulesza, the president of the Polish soccer federation, while watching the host nation Poland play against Argentina on the tournament’s opening day. When asked by Sky News upon his arrival at the stadium, Infantino mentioned that there would be an appropriate time and place to address the issues but emphasized that, for now, they were focused on enjoying football.
Regarding his potential resignation or candidacy for a fourth term next year, Infantino chose not to respond. Following the collapse of his World Cup profit-sharing plan due to opposition from numerous FIFA member nations and some officials, Infantino had largely remained out of the public eye.
European nations, constituting a quarter of the 24-team roster, retracted their boycott threat after receiving assurances from FIFA that the plan would not be resurrected. Legal battles stemming from the initial proposal are ongoing, with Europe playing a pivotal role in attempting to remove Infantino before the upcoming FIFA election.
Infantino drew global ire in July when details of his $20 billion subsidiary plan to control FIFA’s commercial rights, including the World Cup, were leaked. The subsidiary, in which investors led by Joshua Kushner’s New York fund were to hold a 20% stake, was intended to provide $20 million offers to each of FIFA’s 211 member federations. Despite the mid-September acceptance deadline, the proposal was retracted by Infantino within four days following backlash from various soccer bodies and FIFA officials.
