“Hopeful Signs: Parents Find Solace in Daughter’s Progress”

Share

Maya Gebala’s parents are finding solace in even the smallest movements their 12-year-old daughter makes as she fights for her life at B.C. Children’s Hospital. The Grade 7 student was one of the victims of a tragic mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, where eight people lost their lives, including students, a teacher, and the shooter’s family members.

Maya was airlifted to the hospital in Vancouver after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds, with her parents, Cia Edmonds and David Gebala, revealing that she suffered severe injuries to her head and neck. Despite the grim situation, there is a glimmer of hope as Maya recently displayed signs of progress by moving her hand and leg, as well as coughing, after being taken off sedation.

The parents are grateful for the outpouring of support from the community, with social media posts documenting Maya’s journey attracting thousands of supportive comments. However, they are disheartened by attempts to politicize the tragedy, emphasizing the importance of addressing mental health issues and the lack of resources rather than focusing on other factors.

Edmonds and Gebala shared their frustration over the negative comments directed towards the shooter’s mother, Jennifer Strang, who also lost her life in the incident. Edmonds expressed empathy towards Strang, mentioning their past connection and acknowledging the challenges she faced as a single mother trying to support her troubled child.

The harrowing events of that fateful day unfolded unexpectedly for Maya, who was looking forward to a regular day at school. Edmonds received a distressing call informing her of the lockdown at the school, leading her to rush to the scene where she learned of Maya’s critical condition.

As Maya continues her battle for survival, her parents remain hopeful for her recovery, cherishing every small improvement she makes. They draw strength from the overwhelming support they have received globally and eagerly anticipate the day when Maya will open her eyes and utter the word, “Mama.”

For those impacted by this tragic event, mental health resources are available nationwide to provide support during these challenging times.
