“Graphic Journalist and Daughter Find Passion in Whistling Contest”

Share

A contestant on the BBC quiz show “Only Connect” once mentioned participating in an international whistling contest, sparking the curiosity of graphic journalist Ben Shannon and leading him to sign up for the Masters of Musical Whistling mailing list with his daughter, Sumire. Initially taking it lightly, Shannon soon realized the competition’s seriousness as they were selected to audition. Coaching sessions with Carole Anne Kaufman, known as the Whistling Diva, revealed the need for dedicated practice.

Despite initial doubts, Shannon and Sumire committed to daily training sessions, eventually earning a spot in the competition held in Los Angeles. Meeting other talented contestants from around the world, Shannon found inspiration in their genuine passion for whistling. Shedding his ironic outlook, Shannon and Sumire performed admirably at the event, with Sumire winning silver in the kids’ category and Shannon clinching gold in the adult category.

Reflecting on the experience, Shannon acknowledged the significance of genuinely caring about something, embracing the moments of vulnerability and silliness that lead to true passion. The competition proved to be a transformative journey for Shannon and Sumire, highlighting the joy and fulfillment found in pursuing what truly matters.
