A groundbreaking research initiative led by two graduate students at the University of Windsor is monitoring the nocturnal migration patterns of birds across Canada in real-time. Natalie Emerick and Madison Bygrove have deployed 100 acoustic recorders from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, capturing and categorizing sounds using AI technology from Motus Audio.
The recorders, equipped with microphones, capture bird calls in various locations, aiding in species identification. This research venture marks a pioneering effort in nocturnal bird migration studies, particularly in eastern regions. By leveraging advancements in tracking technologies, the researchers can efficiently analyze vast amounts of data collected nightly.
Drawing on existing Canadian migration monitoring networks, the team strategically placed the devices with the help of collaborators, including ornithologists and volunteers. Notably, the project aims to assess the impact of artificial night light on bird behavior, shedding light on how birds interact with their environment.
As the fall migration season approaches, Emerick and Bygrove anticipate uncovering valuable insights from the data. The Motus Audio technology, initially developed for telemetry purposes, has facilitated this extensive research effort, creating an “audio curtain” across Canada.
Professor Ryan Norris of the University of Guelph commends the project for monitoring bird movements in challenging environments like the Canadian boreal forest. The AI model, though not flawless, proves effective in identifying bird species, especially during flight. Norris envisions the research providing critical data on bird population dynamics and contributing to conservation efforts.
By tracking species migration through different seasons, the project aims to enhance our understanding of bird populations and factors influencing their declines. The initiative offers a unique perspective on avian movements, creating a comprehensive “audio curtain” that could revolutionize bird conservation strategies nationwide.
