Google Maps has been updated to show “Lake America” when users in the United States search for the lake’s name. However, Canadians will continue to see Lake Ontario unless they specifically search for Lake America. The decision to make this change was based on the U.S. government’s official geographic names database, which has officially renamed the lake.
President Donald Trump recently signed an executive order to rename the body of water as Lake America. This move followed the breakdown of trade discussions between the U.S. and Canada, with Canada subsequently announcing retaliatory tariffs. In response to Trump’s order, Prime Minister Mark Carney affirmed that Canadians will continue to refer to the body of water as Lake Ontario, both presently and in the future.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a new sign for “Lake Ontario Now and Always” in Winona, a lakeside community near Hamilton. This unveiling coincided with President Trump’s executive order to change the lake’s name to “Lake America.”
