A group of highly intelligent dogs has captured the attention of researchers for their exceptional ability to learn an extensive vocabulary of words. While most dogs typically pick up words like “walk” or “fetch” through interactions with their owners, a select few are considered “gifted word learners.” These exceptional canines have been found capable of learning over 100 words, with some even reaching the remarkable milestone of understanding more than 1,000 toy names.
A recent study published in the journal Science sheds light on this extraordinary talent among dogs. According to Shany Dror, a post-doctoral researcher at E.L.T.E. University in Budapest and the Veterinary University of Vienna, the number of words these gifted dogs can learn appears to have no limit, depending only on the owner’s patience and the space available for toys in the household.
In a global search spanning seven years, researchers identified around 40 to 45 dogs with the ability to grasp over 100 words. These dogs, which come from various breeds and are not limited to Border Collies, demonstrated an impressive capacity to understand between 200 and 300 toy names. Notably, one dog in previous studies showcased an exceptional vocabulary of over 1,000 toy names.
Among the exceptional dogs is Miso, a Border Collie from Oshawa, Ontario, known for his remarkable word-learning skills. His owner, Veronica Suen, initially underestimated Miso’s intelligence until participating in studies led by Dror. Through these studies, Miso showcased his ability to recognize and respond to a wide array of toy names, surpassing the expectations of his owner.
In Dror’s recent research involving 14 gifted dogs, the focus was on testing word recall abilities while ensuring that the dogs were not influenced by visual cues. The results indicated that these dogs could rapidly learn new words by simply overhearing them, akin to the language development stage observed in toddlers aged between 18 and 24 months. However, Dror emphasizes that while dogs can learn words proficiently, their cognitive processes differ significantly from human language acquisition.
While comparisons between dog and human language development have garnered attention, experts like Andrea Breen caution against equating the two. Breen, an associate professor at the University of Guelph, highlights the need to consider the distinct learning mechanisms and cognitive processes at play in dogs and children, even when they exhibit similar behaviors.
To nurture similar cognitive skills in dogs, Breen suggests engaging in activities that are meaningful and enjoyable for the dogs. Spending quality time with pets, engaging in interactive play, and providing mental stimulation can enhance a dog’s learning potential and strengthen the bond between owners and their furry companions.
