Four individuals are facing multiple charges following a reported trespassing incident at Western University in London, Ontario, which led to the discovery of chemicals that could potentially be used to create explosives in a nearby residence. The London Police Service revealed that the chemicals were found in the University Heights neighborhood to the west of the campus, prompting a significant police presence in the area, including a bomb disposal unit and an excavator stationed near the property at 212 Chesham Place.

The investigation commenced over the weekend at Western University when officers responded to a trespassing call and apprehended a 27-year-old man from Ottawa, who was subsequently found in possession of a loaded handgun after a pursuit. Subsequent inquiries revealed the involvement of another individual, leading law enforcement to the residence on Chesham Place where two more suspects were taken into custody.

During a press briefing at the scene, Sean Travis, acting detective superintendent with the London police, expressed concerns about the presence of certain chemicals in the residence that could potentially be utilized for creating explosive devices. However, there was no evidence of actual devices being present. Travis emphasized the importance of handling these materials with care to ensure the safety of everyone involved, including emergency personnel and the local community.

The suspects have been identified as Fei (Frank) Han, 25, and Feiyang (Astrid) Ji, 21, both from London, along with Jerry Tong, 27, from Ottawa, and Zekun Wang, 26, a resident of London. Han and Ji were charged with unlawful possession of explosives, while Tong faced multiple charges, including possession of a concealed weapon and firearm-related offenses. Wang was charged with break and enter and firearm-related offenses.

Investigations have been ongoing at the residence since the weekend, with neighbors expressing surprise at the events that unfolded. Streets in the vicinity of the property remain closed as authorities continue to secure the area and remove the hazardous chemicals. Police have not disclosed the exact connection between the trespassing incident at the university and the discovery of the chemicals.

Western University temporarily closed four engineering buildings in response to the initial incident but later reopened them. The university is cooperating with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation to ensure the safety of the campus community. Residents are advised to avoid the closed-off areas as the investigation continues.
