Virginia authorities announced on Thursday that Justin Fairfax, the former lieutenant governor of the state, allegedly murdered his wife before taking his own life. The tragic incident unfolded at their residence in northern Virginia, where their teenage son dialed 911 in the early hours of the morning.
According to Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, the couple was discovered deceased at the scene. Law enforcement had previously responded to a call in January after Justin Fairfax reported an assault by his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax. However, after reviewing home security footage, authorities determined that the reported assault did not occur.
Chief Davis described the situation as an ongoing domestic conflict related to a complex divorce. Despite formally separating in 2024 and filing for divorce the following year, the couple continued to share a home with their two children.
Justin Fairfax, a graduate of Columbia University’s law school in New York City, had a background in Democratic political campaigns, judicial clerkship, and service on the U.S. Senate’s judiciary committee before pursuing a career in Virginia politics. He was elected as the state’s lieutenant governor in November 2017, holding the second-highest office in the executive branch.
In early 2019, while serving in Governor Ralph Northam’s administration, Fairfax faced allegations of sexual assault from two women dating back to 2000 and 2004. He denied the accusations, labeling them as part of a coordinated attack on his reputation. Despite calls for his resignation from both political parties, Fairfax continued in his role and did not face legal proceedings regarding the allegations.
Court documents revealed that Fairfax encountered financial hardships following the sexual assault accusations, leading to his resignation from a prominent law firm. Additionally, the couple had a tax lien of over $91,000 from the IRS, which was resolved in 2021.
Cerina Fairfax, 49, operated a family dentistry practice in northern Virginia, having graduated from Duke University and the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. Described as a passionate reader who enjoyed traveling, yoga, running with her Vizsla dogs, and spending time with family, she and Justin had been married since 2006.
The news of the tragic deaths was met with shock and sorrow by the community and public figures. Virginia’s current lieutenant governor expressed her devastation and sympathy for the family, emphasizing the need for support during this difficult time. U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, both from Virginia, offered prayers and condolences to the Fairfax family, highlighting the profound impact of the distressing events.
