The family of a man who lost his life at Big Island Lake Cree Nation is grappling with disbelief as they seek to comprehend the reasons behind his fatal shooting. Saskatchewan RCMP have verified that one individual succumbed to injuries in a shooting incident on the First Nation, located approximately 320 kilometers northwest of Saskatoon, while three others sustained injuries. Law enforcement officials are currently in pursuit of two suspects believed to be linked to the shooting, as the three injured individuals are receiving treatment in a hospital for severe but non-life-threatening wounds. Although the identities of the victims have not been disclosed by the police, Larry Wahpistikwan has identified his 31-year-old son, Neil, as the individual who tragically lost his life.

Expressing his shock at the news, Larry recounted witnessing police attempting to revive his son at the scene of the shooting. The Wahpistikwan family is overwhelmed by grief, with Larry’s brother Gary recounting the moment he heard gunshots outside his residence following a round dance event, leading to the discovery of the victims and the subsequent rush to get medical assistance. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, leaving both Larry and Gary bewildered about the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

Big Island Lake Cree Nation faced heightened security concerns following the incident, prompting a lockdown that was later lifted by RCMP after no immediate threat to public safety was identified. As investigations continue into the shooting and efforts are made to enhance community safety, local authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to assist in the ongoing inquiry. The community remains vigilant against potential threats, with a focus on deterring criminal activities from infiltrating the reserve. Chief David Sandfly expressed condolences to those affected by the tragedy and emphasized the community’s determination to address issues of violence and maintain a secure environment for its residents.
