Patty Czajka, who grew up in Detroit, was captivated by a Canadian TV series set in Prince Edward Island during her childhood. Every Sunday, she would watch “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother and was especially fond of Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the 1990s show. When Czajka learned that Ruffman would be appearing at a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the series, she eagerly purchased a ticket to attend.
Describing Ruffman as her childhood version of a Disney princess, Czajka expressed her excitement at being in P.E.I. for the convention. Fans from various parts of the world gathered on the Island for the sold-out event celebrating “Road to Avonlea,” a renowned Canadian series that aired in over 100 countries. The show premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.
The series followed the story of young Sarah Stanley, played by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, who is sent to live with her late mother’s relatives at the beginning of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the show garnered a global following over the years.
During the three-day convention, attendees enjoyed oyster and wine tastings, engaged in panel discussions with the show’s cast and crew, and embarked on tours to filming locations and sites related to Montgomery’s life and work. Edward Lemon from Fine Book Fairs, the organizer of the convention, highlighted the enduring appeal of the show, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and community.
Ruffman shared her delight in experiencing the fans’ enthusiasm firsthand at the convention, emphasizing the lasting impact of the show on viewers. Czajka mentioned that she is now introducing the series to her children, finding joy in sharing a show that resonated with her across generations. She praised the rarity of finding a program that can be enjoyed by both adults and kids together, emphasizing the timeless quality of “Road to Avonlea.”
