Stephanie Labrosse, the boy’s mother, revealed that her son, Kaleb O’Neil, sustained a severe concussion, a fractured cheekbone, three stitches on his upper lip, a broken arm bone, and a nose injury requiring surgery. Kaleb will need ongoing medical treatment and rehabilitation, with the incident impacting not only his physical well-being but also his emotional state.
Labrosse emphasized the importance of sharing their story with the public, as Kaleb is struggling to feel safe in public spaces and has opted to continue his education through online schooling due to the trauma. The family is taking each day as it comes, focusing on Kaleb’s recovery process, which has been further complicated by past emotional challenges stemming from the loss of his father and grandmother.
On the night of July 31, Kaleb informed his mother of being attacked while out for a bike ride, prompting Labrosse to rush to his aid. Upon arrival, she encountered a distressing scene with Kaleb visibly injured and in need of immediate medical attention. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.
Following the incident, two individuals, 18-year-old Skyler Caron and a 14-year-old whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, were arrested by the Greater Sudbury police and charged with offenses including aggravated assault and making threats of violence. Both accused have yet to enter a plea, as confirmed by the Sudbury Courthouse.
Despite being a typically reserved teenager before the attack, Kaleb’s behavior has changed, with him now staying closer to his mother and avoiding going out alone. The family has received support from victim services and is considering counseling to aid in their healing process. Labrosse expressed the impact the incident has had on the household, including her father who is seeking counseling to cope with the aftermath.
