LithiumBank, a mining firm exploring lithium resources in the region, holds licenses for two projects located northwest of Edmonton. Utilizing wells originally constructed for oil and gas extraction, they are now accessing underground brines containing lithium, essential for clean energy battery production.

Unlike traditional lithium sources like rock mining in Australia or brine extraction in South America, DLE methods directly extract lithium without relying on solar evaporation. Researchers, such as Ngai Yin Yip from Columbia University, are exploring these advanced methods to reduce reliance on traditional lithium sources like South America.
