“Conservative Party Convention Debates Contentious Policy Proposals”

Share

Members of the Conservative Party are urging their leader to adopt various contentious policy positions such as endorsing private health care, eliminating Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies, and revising the party’s stance on the abortion debate. These are just a few of the numerous proposals set to be discussed at the Conservative Party convention in Calgary later this month. Some of these proposals may progress to the final plenary stage where delegates will determine if they will become official party policies.

A wide range of proposals are up for debate, including abolishing the temporary foreign worker program, empowering the ethics commissioner, prohibiting a digital central bank currency, and enhancing oversight on judicial appointments.

While policies approved during the convention carry significance as reflections of the Conservative grassroots members’ views, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is not obligated to adopt them.

One of the proposals concerning health care in Canada suggests providing provinces with “private delivery options” within a universal, public health-care system. These options include offering insurance coverage for health-care services, aligning with countries that have two-tier health systems.

Another proposal aims to restrict access to medical assistance in dying (MAID). Currently, healthcare professionals qualified for medically assisted death cannot be compelled to participate, but they are mandated to refer patients seeking MAID to willing professionals. A proposal under consideration would eliminate this referral requirement.

Abortion and Conversion Therapy

The Conservative Party’s existing policy states that a Conservative government will not endorse legislation regulating abortion. During the recent federal election, Poilievre reiterated this stance, emphasizing that his government would not introduce laws restricting a woman’s right to make decisions about her body.

One of the policy proposals up for debate suggests removing this commitment from the policy book, citing inconsistencies with the party’s current positions on abortion legislation, conscience rights for doctors, and opposition to sex-selective abortions.

Despite unanimous support in the House of Commons to ban conversion therapy, a proposal suggests revisiting this decision, arguing that parents should have the right to arrange body-affirming talk therapy for their gender-confused children.

The proposal frames opposition to the ban on conversion therapy as a parental rights issue, asserting that government initiatives should respect and support Canadian families.

The Jordan Peterson Policy

The Jordan Peterson Policy proposal enters the transgender debate by preventing professional accreditation revocation for expressing opinions or refusing compelled speech. This proposal aims to address concerns raised by Jordan Peterson regarding existing laws requiring compliance with preferred pronouns for transgender individuals.
