Vizsla Silver Corp employees faced a challenging work environment marked by gun battles, cartel activities, and drones, according to the brother of a geologist working for the Canadian mining company in Mexico. The geologist, José Manuel Castañeda Hernández, was among five individuals who were found deceased after being abducted by a suspected faction of the Sinaloa cartel.

The attorney, Jaime Castañeda, revealed that his brother had witnessed gunfire near the company’s exploration sites in the mountainous region of Sinaloa. Gunshots were heard in the vicinity as the workers were preparing to rest in a secured residential compound in Concordia, situated approximately 50 kilometers east of Mazatlán.

José Manuel Castañeda Hernández, aged 43, was one of ten individuals, including geologists, engineers, and security personnel, who were taken captive on January 23 in Concordia. The Mexican Attorney General’s Office confirmed the identification of the bodies of five of the abducted men, all of whom were associated with Vizsla Silver.

The kidnappings occurred amidst escalating violence in Sinaloa due to an internal conflict within the Sinaloa cartel. The ongoing struggle between factions, Los Chapitos and La Mayiza, has resulted in a significant number of casualties and disappearances in the state. Authorities suspect Los Chapitos were responsible for the abduction of the mining company workers.

Vizsla Silver emphasized its commitment to operating with caution and adhering to stringent security measures. The company expressed its support for the affected families and pledged to collaborate with authorities to ensure the safety of its personnel. Vizsla Silver’s CEO, Michael Konnert, underscored the company’s dedication to upholding ethical standards and providing assistance to those impacted by the tragic incident.

Mexican authorities are exploring various theories surrounding the kidnapping, including the possibility of mistaken identity. Security experts are investigating potential connections between Vizsla Silver and criminal elements in the region. The company maintains that it complies with legal regulations and condemns any illicit activities.

Families of the victims, such as Socorro Osorio Sánchez, are demanding justice and expressing their anguish over the disappearances. The situation has raised concerns about the security challenges faced by companies operating in volatile areas like Sinaloa. The incident underscores the risks associated with conducting business in regions controlled by powerful criminal organizations.
