“Canadian Figure Skating Championships Set Stage for Winter Olympics”

Share

The Canadian figure skating championships in Gatineau, Quebec, are a crucial event leading up to the Winter Olympics, just four weeks away. While junior-age athletes have already started competing, the focus is on the elite-level events beginning Friday. These competitions will play a significant role in determining the Canadian representatives at the upcoming Olympics in Italy.

After a disappointing performance at the 2022 Beijing Games, where Canada failed to secure a figure skating medal for the first time since 1980, the country has secured a total of eight entries across various events in Milan. The selections for the Olympics are not solely based on the championships but also consider the skaters’ performances over the past few seasons. The final Olympic selections will be announced by Skate Canada on Sunday evening following the conclusion of the championships.

While some skaters are already likely contenders for the Olympic team, others will need to showcase their best performances during the championships to secure their spots. Even those expected to make the team will face pressure to demonstrate their medal-worthy form ahead of the Olympics.

In the pairs events, ice dancers Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, along with pairs duo Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, are standout contenders heading to Milan. Stellato-Dudek and Deschamps, who claimed Canada’s first figure skating world title in six years, will aim to regain their winning form after facing setbacks in recent events. Gilles and Poirier, known for their consistency, have been podium regulars at world championships.

Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha are expected to secure one of the Olympic ice dance berths, with the battle for the remaining spots intensifying. On the pairs side, Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud are favored for the second Olympic berth.

In the singles events, Canadian skaters face tough competition with slim chances of winning medals. However, the women’s and men’s competitions at the national championships are wide open, offering potential surprises. Madeline Schizas and Roman Sadovsky are among the favorites in their respective events, while emerging talents like Sara-Maude Dupuis and Stephen Gogolev pose strong challenges.

Viewers can catch the ongoing junior and upcoming elite-level events live on CBCSports.ca and the CBC Sports app. The schedule for the elite events includes the men’s short program on Friday, pairs short program on Friday evening, ice dance rhythm on Saturday morning, and other events through Sunday.
