“Canadian Athletes Shine with Gold and Silver in Women’s 100m Final”

Canadian athletes claimed the top two spots in the women’s 100-meter T47 final on Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games. Toronto’s Sheriauna Haase secured the gold medal in a Games-record time of 12.23 seconds, setting a new national record in the process. Her teammate, 17-year-old Chloe Dunbar from Newport, N.S., clinched the silver with a personal best time of 12.33 seconds.

Expressing her excitement, Haase mentioned how proud she felt after the exhilarating race and credited the positive experience of working with Dunbar. Both athletes pushed each other to excel, leading to their podium success. New Zealand’s Anna Grimaldi finished third with a time of 12.46 seconds.

Dunbar described the evening as “magical” and emphasized the supportive atmosphere in the stadium that helped her execute her race plan successfully. She highlighted the importance of a strong start, maintaining momentum through the middle, and finishing with a strong drive to secure her spot on the podium.

In another event, visually-impaired sprinter George Quarcoo and his guide Oluwasegun Makinde won the bronze medal in the men’s 100m T12 final with a time of 11.06 seconds. Quarcoo reflected on his challenging journey, mentioning a significant injury in 2018 and expressing his satisfaction with handling business and achieving a podium position.

Julia Tunks secured a silver medal in the women’s discus event, adding to Canada’s medal tally on Day 7. Tunks mentioned the hard work put in throughout the season, aiming to medal at the Games, which they successfully achieved. Jamaica’s Samantha Hall claimed gold in the event.

Damian Warner took the lead in the decathlon after three events, showcasing impressive performances in the 100m heats and long jump. Despite facing challenges in the shot put and high jump, Warner maintained his lead heading into the final day of the decathlon.

Canadian weightlifters Xavier Lusignan and Etta Love secured bronze medals in their respective weightlifting events. Lusignan’s performance in the men’s 110kg final and Love’s achievement in the women’s +86kg event marked their first Commonwealth Games medals.

In other Canadian results, athletes showcased their talents across various events, with mixed outcomes in track and field, cycling, and bowls competitions on Day 7 of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Canada continued to demonstrate its strength across different disciplines, accumulating a total of eight weightlifting medals, leading the medal count in that category.
