The Canadian women’s wheelchair basketball team kicked off their campaign at the World Championships in Ottawa with an impressive win on Wednesday. Arinn Young led the team with 18 points, while Kady Dandeneau recorded a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds as Canada secured a commanding 76-51 victory at TD Place.
Despite falling behind 21-15 in the opening quarter, Canada quickly recovered to dominate the game and secure a comfortable lead going into the final quarter. Young attributed the slow start to nerves in front of the home crowd but praised the team’s ability to regroup and regain composure.
Spain, the three-time defending European championship bronze medalists, entered the competition after finishing eighth at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, where Canada claimed the fourth spot.
In other Group A matches, China defeated Australia 48-37, and Great Britain triumphed over Brazil with a score of 78-41. The ongoing men’s and women’s competitions are being held in Ottawa this year.
The Canadian women’s team is set to face Australia next on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET at Carleton University, while the Canadian men will take on Morocco later on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at TD Place.
