After the exciting FIFA World Cup events at BMO Field, the temporary stands have been removed. Last June, the Canadian men’s soccer team kicked off their journey to the Round of 16 with a 1-1 match against Bosnia-Herzegovina in Toronto. This weekend, they return to face Chile on the same field to start their new four-year cycle aiming for the 2030 tournament.

Coach Marsch expressed pride in the team’s performance but emphasized the need to refocus on upcoming challenges. Ranked 30th, Canada will play against 49th-ranked Chile in the first of three friendlies over two weeks. Following a recent loss to Morocco, Canada is eager to climb in the world rankings to secure a spot in the 2030 World Cup.

The team’s successful run in the previous World Cup, where they reached the Round of 32, was hailed as a historic moment for Canadian soccer. Marsch acknowledged the significance of that achievement but stressed the importance of building on that success for the future.

Despite missing key players like Davies and Cornelius due to various reasons, the squad for the upcoming game features 17 World Cup veterans. Notable returnees include Eustaquio and Larin, both instrumental in previous matches. With a mix of experienced and young players like Knight-Lebel and Chukwu, the team is gearing up for upcoming friendlies against Peru and the United States.

As the team prepares for future challenges, winger Hoilett, set to retire from international duty, will be recognized for his decade-long contribution. Reflecting on the team’s progress, he emphasized the need to continue breaking barriers and making history in Canadian soccer.
