Canada’s men’s indoor volleyball team is on the cusp of securing a spot in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Ranked 13th globally, the Canadian team can book their ticket to the Games with a win over either Cuba or the Dominican Republic in the gold-medal match at 6 p.m. ET in Moncton, N.B., on Saturday.
In a dominant performance, Canada’s 14-player squad defeated Mexico with a clean sweep of 3-0 sets, with scores of 25-21, 25-18, and 25-13 on Friday. The Canadians outperformed Mexico in attack points (42-31), blocks (8-0), and aces (8-2) at the Avenir Centre, bouncing back from their recent loss to the United States in the gold-medal match of the NORCECA Continental Championship.
The Canadian men’s team has a rich Olympic history, having participated in six Summer Games and achieving their best result with a fourth-place finish in 1984, which was also held in Los Angeles.
Canada had previously defeated Mexico in the 2024 Olympic qualifiers and secured a 10th-place finish in Paris. In contrast, Mexico ended a 48-year Olympic absence in 2016 and finished 11th in Rio.
Earlier in the week, Canada secured a spot at the World Cup in Poland next September by defeating Cuba in the semifinals in Moncton. The team’s strong performance has put them in a promising position to qualify for the prestigious Olympic event.
