Canada is set to enforce additional sanctions on Russia targeting 162 individuals, entities, and vessels linked to the Russian military. Prime Minister Mark Carney revealed this decision during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the G7 summit. The leaders discussed collaboration on drone production and expressed support for Ukraine’s request for more Patriot missiles to counter Russian missile threats.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for Canada’s support, describing the session on Ukraine as productive. The leaders explored ways to enhance missile production and reiterated the need to push Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the ongoing conflict. Carney strongly condemned Russia’s recent attack on Kyiv, including the strike on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery.

Canada’s Ambassador to France, Nathalie Drouin, emphasized the positive nature of the discussions on Ukraine and stressed the importance of continuing to aid the country. Canada had previously provided $2.8 billion in military assistance to Ukraine and imposed sanctions on thousands of individuals, entities, and vessels. Carney announced an additional $270 million contribution to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Carney’s meeting with Zelenskyy is part of a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G7 summit. The summit will also address conflicts in the Middle East and the evolving landscape of foreign aid funding, prompting a reassessment of international development strategies.
