Recent reports revealed Carney’s efforts to enhance Canada’s ties with the 27-nation European bloc without seeking full membership. The proposal includes potentially designating Canada as an “associate member” of the EU.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre strongly opposed the idea, expressing on social media that Carney’s approach is disconnected from reality. However, a senior Canadian official, speaking anonymously to CBC, disclosed ongoing discussions on deepening Canada’s relations with Europe.
The Canadian government prioritizes strengthening ties with Europe to reduce economic reliance on the United States amid escalating trade tensions. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne highlighted the potential for partnership with the EU as a strategic move given the size of the European market compared to the U.S.
In response to trade disputes with the U.S., Canada has imposed counter-tariffs, prompting the U.S. to announce a ban on Canadian imports starting September 29, including alcohol and motorcycles. The EU Ambassador to Canada, Geneviève Tuts, emphasized the need to expand and redefine the EU-Canada relationship beyond the current partnership.
Carney is scheduled to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, following the invitation from President Roberta Metsola. Additionally, a summit between Canada and the EU is set to take place in late October to further solidify their collaboration.
