1. Canada is gearing up for 5-minute EV charging with the introduction of a megawatt charger.

Exciting news on the EV front: BYD, a Chinese automaker, unveiled “flash” chargers capable of adding 400 kilometers of range to an EV in just five minutes, competing with traditional gas filling times. BYD has now enhanced this technology, launching a global rollout in Europe and introducing the Denza Z9 GT, its first compatible European model.
Flash chargers boast a megawatt of charging power, enabling rapid charging speeds of two kilometers of range per second. Notably, Canada is set to unveil its first megawatt charger this summer in Quebec, tailored specifically for freight trucks.
BYD’s vision is to alleviate “charge anxiety” by making EV charging as swift as refueling a gasoline car. Plans include constructing over 4,000 flash charging stations in China. Additionally, the recent EV and Charging Expo in Toronto showcased BYD’s latest 2.1-megawatt flash charger, promising a 10% to 70% charge in just five minutes.
Canada’s first megawatt charger, under construction in Quebec, will target freight trucks, aiming to curb emissions from heavy-duty vehicles. This project, led by Hydro-Québec, marks a significant step towards electrifying truck fleets.
Propulsion Québec’s study proposes a corridor of megawatt truck chargers from Toronto to Quebec City, emphasizing the feasibility of this initiative with existing technology to bolster electric truck adoption.
Daniel Breton, CEO of Electric Mobility Canada, foresees flash charging becoming the norm in Canada within the next five to ten years as vehicle technology evolves to accommodate this rapid charging solution.
