Canada’s defense minister has allocated an extra $1.4 billion to enhance ammunition production, stressing the critical importance of this investment for the nation’s future. Speaking at IMT Precision in Ingersoll, Ontario, a company specializing in shell casings, David McGuinty unveiled the funding under the Canadian Defence Industry Resilience Program aimed at boosting defense equipment manufacturing.
As part of this initiative, IMT Precision is set to receive up to $306.3 million to establish a new facility dedicated to producing metal shells for 155-millimeter artillery projectiles. This move aligns with the Liberal government’s recent spending commitments, including investments in the Far North. Last summer, NATO leaders agreed to raise defense expenditure across the Western alliance to five percent of the gross domestic product over the next decade.
McGuinty emphasized the necessity of domestic ammunition production, highlighting its essential role in safeguarding against global supply disruptions, meeting the armed forces’ requirements, and fostering job creation in communities like Ingersoll. The government’s recent unveiling of a comprehensive $35 billion plan to modernize and expand Canada’s military presence in the north underscores its strategic focus on defense initiatives.
Furthermore, McGuinty announced a $200 million investment over a decade to secure a dedicated space launch pad near Canso, Nova Scotia, with the long-term objective of establishing a spaceport for Canada and its allies. While meeting the two percent defense spending target by the end of March, McGuinty emphasized that the investment in IMT forms part of a broader strategic vision, emphasizing careful planning and execution.
IMT Precision CEO Cheryl Hacking acknowledged the need to strengthen artillery and munitions production in Canada to meet contemporary security challenges. Stressing readiness to support the Canadian Armed Forces, NATO partners, and other allies, Hacking affirmed IMT’s commitment to providing essential weaponry for operational safety and effectiveness. The exact location of IMT’s upcoming facility is yet to be determined, with further details expected to be disclosed in the coming weeks. With 500 current employees, IMT Precision anticipates creating around 300 new jobs at the new facility.
