A young grizzly bear named Fitz from the Calgary Zoo briefly left his designated area early one Sunday morning, according to a spokesperson from the Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo. The bear was safely returned to his back-of-house space after being immobilized by the animal care team following established emergency protocols. Fortunately, there were no injuries to any visitors, staff, volunteers, or animals.
The incident occurred before the zoo opened to the public, prompting a temporary closure of the Wild Canada area where the bears reside for a thorough assessment before reopening later in the day. The zoo is now conducting a review of the situation as part of its standard post-incident procedures.
Calgary Police Service Staff Sgt. John Guigon confirmed that there was no threat to the public during the bear’s brief escapade. The bear was tranquilized by zoo personnel after taking a stroll around the premises, with police officers on standby to assist if needed. Guigon noted that despite initial concerns, the bear appeared more curious than dangerous.
Fitz and his sibling Turner were introduced to the zoo last year as orphaned cubs following the unfortunate death of their mother near Diamond Valley.
