“British PM’s Aide Resigns Over Ambassador Scandal”

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s top aide resigned on Sunday amidst controversy surrounding the selection of Peter Mandelson as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to the United States, despite his association with Jeffrey Epstein. Morgan McSweeney cited his role in recommending Mandelson, 72, for the crucial diplomatic position in 2024 as a mistake, acknowledging that it has had negative repercussions on the party, the nation, and public trust in politics.

The move has sparked scrutiny of Starmer’s judgment following the release of documents from the extensive Epstein files in the U.S., which indicated that Mandelson may have shared sensitive information with the convicted sex offender during his tenure as the U.K. government’s business secretary amid the 2008 financial crisis. Starmer’s administration has pledged to disclose internal communications and other records related to the Mandelson appointment to demonstrate that Mandelson provided misleading information to officials.

Despite being a former senior cabinet minister, ambassador, and respected figure within the Labour Party, Mandelson has not faced legal charges in connection with the Epstein case. Metropolitan Police conducted searches at Mandelson’s London residence and a related property as part of a complex investigation requiring substantial evidence gathering and analysis.

Starmer had previously dismissed Mandelson from his ambassadorial role in September due to previous revelations about his ties to Epstein. However, critics argue that the recently disclosed emails from the U.S. Justice Department have raised serious doubts about Starmer’s decision-making, asserting that he should have exercised better judgment in appointing Mandelson initially.
