The inaugural Asian version of the popular music event Eurovision is set to take place in Bangkok later this year. According to organizers, a total of 10 Asian countries, including Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, and others like Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan, are confirmed to participate in the competition. More nations are anticipated to join before the grand finale in November.

Martin Green, the contest’s director, expressed the significance of launching this new chapter in Asia, a region known for its rich culture, creativity, and talent, especially as the Eurovision Song Contest commemorates its 70th anniversary. Chuwit Sirivajjakul from the Thailand Tourism Authority highlighted Bangkok’s reputation as a melting pot of cultures, music, and festive spirit.

The main Eurovision gala, managed by the European Broadcasting Union, attracts over 100 million viewers annually. This year’s primary competition featuring 35 countries is scheduled for May in Vienna, with some countries like Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Spain opting out due to issues concerning Israel’s participation.

While Eurovision aims to focus on pop music rather than politics, it has faced controversies linked to global events. Notably, Russia was expelled from the competition in 2022 following its military actions in Ukraine. The event has also been affected by conflicts like the Israel-Hamas war, leading to protests and stricter regulations on political displays at the venues.

As tensions persist, concerns arise regarding potential conflicts at Eurovision Song Contest Asia, particularly considering past border clashes between countries like Thailand and Cambodia.
