Approximately 100 high school graduates were left disappointed last weekend when they mistakenly received admission acceptance emails from Memorial University’s Faculty of Engineering. Memorial University clarified that the emails were not official acceptance offers for the upcoming fall semester but only contained registration information for students who had already been accepted.
Despite the emails containing registration details, they also included language suggesting acceptance, such as phrases like “Congratulations on being accepted into the faculty” and “Look forward to welcoming you to Memorial this fall.” Dennis Peters, the associate dean for MUN’s engineering faculty, acknowledged the confusion caused by the emails and stated that they were sent in error to students whose acceptance status was still pending.
Peters expressed apologies to the affected students and mentioned that the emails were intended for the 350 students who had already been accepted. He attributed the incident to a “human mistake” and emphasized that Memorial University is implementing new processes to prevent similar errors in the future.
Following the initial email, a second email was sent three hours later, advising students to disregard the congratulatory acceptance messages. Peters explained that this prompt response was meant to rectify the mistake quickly.
Family members of the impacted students voiced their frustration on a Facebook group called MUN Parents, describing the errors as disheartening and disappointing for those who believed they had been accepted into the faculty.
Despite the misleading emails, Peters assured that students’ admission decisions had not been finalized and are contingent on the submission and review of high school transcripts, expected to be received by the admissions committee on July 17. Final acceptance or rejection notices are anticipated to be issued by the end of the following week.
