Alberta’s police oversight body is looking into a case where Edmonton police officers fatally shot a man carrying a firearm. This incident followed reports that the man had shot a woman and an infant at a residence in west Edmonton on Sunday. The Edmonton Police Service confirmed that the 36-year-old man died at the scene.
According to EPS, officers were dispatched to a home in the vicinity of Donsdale Drive and 45th Avenue following reports of a man armed with a firearm entering the premises and shooting a woman and an infant. Upon arrival, officers were met by witnesses and the injured parties and promptly initiated containment procedures.
The man, aged 36, emerged from the residence’s front door brandishing a gun. Despite verbal commands, the individual did not comply, prompting three officers to discharge their firearms, as reported by EPS. Although the EPS tactical emergency medical support team tried to save the man, he succumbed to his injuries on-site.
Emergency Medical Services transported an infant and two women to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The Police Review Commission was informed of the incident and subsequently instructed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to conduct an investigation.
