A wildfire researcher in Newfoundland is facing challenges as local wildlife disrupts his study on forest regeneration post wildfires. Lucas Brehaut, a scientist with the Canadian Forest Service, is investigating how forests in Atlantic Canada recover from fires amid increasing occurrences due to climate change.
Brehaut and his team are conducting a five-year study involving the use of open-top chambers (OTCs) to simulate temperature increases caused by global warming. However, their research equipment has been repeatedly damaged by curious animals such as caribou, moose, black bears, wolves, rabbits, and owls.
Despite the setbacks, Brehaut remains understanding, acknowledging that the animals are simply exploring their habitat. Other experts, like Kaitlyn Gaynor from the University of British Columbia, explain that animals are naturally drawn to novel objects in their environment, driven by curiosity and the potential for new food sources.
This phenomenon of wildlife interference in research is not unique to Newfoundland, as Gaynor has experienced similar disruptions during fieldwork in Mozambique, particularly by baboons, hyenas, and elephants. While animals are often the main cause of equipment damage, Brehaut also mentions human interference, such as snowmobiles inadvertently impacting his research sites.
Overall, researchers like Brehaut and Gaynor recognize the importance of coexisting with wildlife and mitigating disruptions through quick fieldwork, minimizing scents, and concealing equipment to reduce animal interference.
